RED RUNT
John and Lorena were persuaded by Rob Van De Waal that buying a compact modified garden puller would help generate interest in the mechanics of a tractor puller and learning to be a team player for younger people interested in the sport.
Red Runt arrived in August 2011. It was formally named Minimum Risk running on a Dahatsu petrol 1.9 engine.
In 2012 it was finally decided that there would be no modified petrol class in the foreseeable future in the UK so we fitted a 1.9 Golf TDI engine out of The Cobra 2 Reloaded (a 600kg compact diesel unlimited) supplied by Paul Beniers in Holland. The engine was highly modified with balanced Crankshafts, Billet Con Rods, Billet Cam Shafts Stage 1 and Billet Pistons.
When we collected the engine in December 2013 we paid a visit to see Rob Van Der Waal who had already made a flywheel and slipper clutch, his comment was 'I knew John would buy it when he got here!'
He asked what size the crank seal was and we told him we had the engine in the back of the van and to Scott's dismay when he opened the van doors Rob came with the forklift and took it out the van and into his workshop, gathering a few of his staff round they decided that Van Der Waal Machinery should do a complete drive train!!!
It is a known fact that Opal Manta gearboxes are recommended the best for this class, Rob got straight on the phone and within 10 minutes had acquired one for us. We left the engine with Rob and they build the engine back plate, steel bell housing, clutch assembly, aluminium thrust bearing assembly, drive shafts, drive thrust couplings, gear box mounting plates and modified starter motor.
The Team then went back over to Holland and picked the engine up in February 2013, decided the best way forward would be a complete new chassis and rollcage, this was made by team members Scott and Zippy (Alan Williamson).
The Bonnet and dashboard was replaced, a set of modified fuel injectors and turbo from Paul Beniers and an intercooler originally built by Pekka Herlevi from the Valtra Team. Fuel pump, Bosch modified and fuel system built and supplied by Chris Wilkinson of S.J & C.W. Wilkinson.
A new bonnet was made by the team to replicate Simply Red, and was painted by Uncle Rick.
